About the Courses

We will provide you with a list of recommended equipment prior to your course. However, since one of the course goals is to teach you about gear and offer you a chance to “test drive” it before you buy it, if you don’t have an item, don’t feel compelled to buy it right away (especially if it’s expensive). Instead, either contact us to see if we can loan or share an item, make a suggestion for what to purchase, or use one of our numerous equipment rental partners that previous clients have happily used.

No experience whatsoever is required for any of our courses, basic or advanced. Just make sure to bring your sense of adventure and positive mental attitude! Whether you have only car-camped or hiked the Appalachian Trail, we are confident that you will find our courses a terrific learning experience. No matter what, we are all students - including our instructors!

Wilderness training courses are not just for mountaineers or military personnel. They are geared for anyone who spends time in the outdoors. These courses are designed for students who either want to be better prepared for emergencies (after all, how often do we read in the news about a “day hiker” who ends up being forced to spend an unpleasant overnight or two?) or who wants to learn the skills necessary to take on a new adventure or challenge.

In some ways, you will find the training and issues very similar to what you see in a front-country setting, but in most other respects, you will find it to be very different. First, you will be learning to deal with issues that you rarely find in an urban environment, like venomous bites, acute hypothermia, and lightning strikes. Also, wilderness medical care requires a greater emphasis on improvisation as you won’t have access to the equipment in your ambulance or office. In turn, the standard of care in wilderness environments may differ substantially from your state protocols. Lastly, most front-country medical providers only deal with patients for brief periods (maybe just the ambulance ride to the hospital) and in teams, but, as a WFA provider, you may need to care for your patient for hours or longer - all by yourself.

Our students truly come from all backgrounds and represent a wide variety of interests. In a class of ten people, it is common that the youngest is 16 and the oldest 70, with a broad mix of ages in between. Also, our courses are fairly consistently comprised of 50% female students. Certainly, many hikers and backpackers register, but we also get many rock climbers, hunters, scout leaders, outdoor educators, adventure racers, and forest rangers.

Course Registration

You can chose to either spend the night in the woods at the training area for free, or you can stay in a local hotel or home-share. Once you register for the course, we will provide more detailed information, which will include some area recommendations.

We will personally follow up with you with three quick and easy forms for you to complete and return. We will send you a detailed course information sheet which will contain all of the applicable details that you’ll need to prepare and arrive for your training.

Simply find the course in which you are interested on the applicable page, or via our Course Schedule, and click on the necessary link. To reserve placement in a True North program, participants must return a deposit payment representing at least 50% of the total course fee, along with all completed and signed forms, to True North. To guarantee placement in the program, True North must receive final payment no less than (30) days before the program start date. If the course you are interested in is full, oftentimes we will make a waitlist available in case of cancellations or changes. Feel free to contact us for additional information.

We accept check and money orders, plus debit and credit card payments (including PayPal, Visa, Master Card, and American Express).

Group Registration

True North can help you or your staff to more effectively assess and manage risk, as well as prepare for and better respond to medical emergencies. This is one important reason why the Boy Scouts and the American Camp Association now require Wilderness First Aid certification in many cases. This way, you or your staff will be ready to respond to an outdoor emergency, or, better yet, avoid one altogether. Our training will also help your organization’s outdoor leaders to become better teachers.

True North has a lot of experience working with a wide variety of organizations, from youth groups, to private business, search-and-rescue teams, hospitals, and the military. We’ve run workshops for UPMC Children’s Hospital and trained Army ROTC cadets. Organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and North Country Trail Association have asked us to work with their teams because they appreciate that leading others in the outdoors, whether children or adults, involves a level of responsibility that extends far beyond just providing a fun and exciting trip.
